Thin Places

I was listening to “The God Anthology: Holiness,” by Pastor Mark Batterson of National Community Church, and this portion stood out to me.

“I love the Celtic tradition. They had a kind of unique spirituality that celebrated nature and creativity…. And they described these moments in life where the natural and the supernatural meet, where heaven meets earth, or there’s this collision between the temporal and the eternal, and they called these places thin places.

“Have you ever been in a thin place, a place where … this divide between the four dimensions that we know, and this eternal reality and the person of Jesus Christ, kind of invades our reality, and … for a brief moment, it’s a thin place where you experience God? It’s a transcendent moment.”

I reflected on how my thinking as to what generally equates to a “thin place” is quite different. Lean times. Hard times. Times when I’ve ventured out on the ice, wondering when it would give way beneath me. Times of uncertainty or confusion. Times of prolonged testing or working through the fallout of a painful experience. Times when I couldn’t understand what God wanted me to accomplish, or what exactly He was asking of me. Those experiences are what I’ve considered to be the thin places in my life.

I’ll be looking at the thin places in a new way now, putting these two trains of thought together. Sure, there will be times ahead when I’ll face obstacles, when my patience will wear thin, when my belief and trust that God’s grace is sufficient will be put to the test. But I’ll remember that those same thin places are an opportunity to see heaven and earth come together in perhaps greater ways than I might otherwise notice.

It’s in the thin places, whether difficult or mysterious, that I have the chance to gain a better understanding of God’s miracle-working power, and His love and care for me, as He touches my existence with a breath of the supernatural.

A thin place is an opportunity to be more intimately aware of God’s presence. “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”1 It’s in the thin places of our lives that we can draw closer to Him.
